Greetings. I am looking for information on goatskins for Djembe drums or
others for that matter that use goatskin heads. I was wondering if the
goatskin is tanned or is it just salted and cleaned, dried and softened in
water when needed. How do you get from a "dead" goat to drum head.

Thanks,

Bernie

Howdy,

Tundra Leather, in Hamilton, ON carries 'rawhide' goat, calf, etc.

Reply to me individually for more specific regional info ...

Drumskins are NOT tanned! As you guessed they are softened
in water to install them on the drum. Some goatskins you buy
for drums have been put through a planer machine to make them
an even thickness and remove the hair. You get a much cooler
looking drum if you start with a skin with the hair still on
it and shave the head once it's installed. BEAUCOUP work, however!
Goat hair is just about like steel wire!!!

As for the whole installation procedure do a google search.
There is quite a bit of how-to info on the net.
